Mel's Review : "The Coldest Girl in Coldtown" by Holly Black

Title: The Coldest Girl in Coldtown
By: Holly Black
Genre: Mature YA Paranormal/Vampires

Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown's gates, you can never leave.

One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.

Mel's Quickie Review: 'The 4th Man' by Lisa Gardner

A young woman is found strangled in the stairwell of a college library, only her sneakers missing. With no physical evidence, no signs of sexual assault, and no witnesses, all the police have to go on are the three men who were in the library with her: her boyfriend and two campus security guards . . . all of whom have secrets, none of whom can be proven guilty.

Ten years later, ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his wife, former police officer Rainie Conner, agree to consult on the still-unsolved case, delving into deep background to comb for any clue that will lead to the woman's murderer. But with no leads and the case colder than the body, will they be able to build a case against one of the three suspects, or is there a fourth man out there? And if the killer has eluded the police this long, how far will he go to ensure justice is never served?

Mel's Musings

Even in short story/novella format, Lisa Gardner never fails to deliver a compelling, fast-paced read. As always with one of her novels, I found myself wanting more. More, more, more- of Rainie and Quincy and D.D. and more about the victim and killer and all that. But I think that goes down to the length of the story itself. It's well written, interesting and entertaining from beginning to end. It took me about a half hour to read it in its entirety. I might just be super duper excited at the glimpse of fresh material featuring Quincy and Rainie, but I really enjoyed this story. I hope maybe Lisa will give us some more crossover awesomeness in the future.

My Rating:

About the Author:

Quick Review of "The Fall" Series 3 on Netflix

I sat down and devoured the third series/season of this amazing show this weekend. I wasn't sure what to expect honestly after the way the second series ended. No spoilers here of course, but it was crazy and I had no idea where the show would go.

For those of you who don't know about The Fall- it was created and written by Allan Cubitt, it's set and filmed in Northern Ireland and it stars the brilliant Gillian Anderson as DSI Stella Gibson and Jamie Dornan as the super creepy serial killer Paul Spector.

When I started this show, I had no idea what I was in for. I'll be honest and admit that I saw Jamie Dornan on the promo image on my Netflix list and my only thought was hello, Mr. eye candy. And then there's the accent. (I can't be the only woman who gets all weak-kneed at certain accents. Or I am. Whatever.) I have loved Jamie Dornan since he was Graham on Once Upon a Time. I figured, even if The Fall turned out to be crap, it would be pleasant sounding/looking crap.

It wasn't crap, though. It was chilling and creepy and brilliantly written and acted. I binged the first two seasons/series in a weekend and then waited impatiently for the third. I wasn't disappointed by any means. I found it to be just as entertaining as the previous series, even if the suspense wasn't wound as tight as before. I was still riveted, waiting to see how things would unravel in the end. I still have questions and I'm really hoping we get more, but if they do end things where they are for good, I can see it as a decent wrap.

In short, if you love crime shows, suspense and can handle some graphic violence, The Fall is well worth the watch. I loved it and will definitely watch it again.
